TESTIMONIALS FROM FAMILIES PARTICIPATING IN COPE

"That (cooking activity) is still one thing my dad asks to help with every day. I'm still using the breathing and imagery your help has meant such an improvement in our quality of life."
Son, Home Setting

"The recommended physical changes to my mom’s environment were helpful and have made a difference. We enjoyed the sessions with our occupational therapist as well. I was surprised at how much had to do with me, the ‘caregiver’. I will admit, I take much better care of my mom than I do myself."
Daughter, Home Setting

"I participated in [this program] and really found it helpful. We didn’t know my mother liked to paint but now she does it for hours at a time and it gives me time to do what I need. Anybody interested in the [the program] should participate, it was wonderful and it really helped me as a caregiver."
Daughter, Home Setting

"[The program] has been a great deal of help. It helps me to understand and then I can help with whatever problem he has."
Wife, Home Setting

ABOUT COPE

The COPE Program is an evidence-based program that has been tested in several randomized trials. It's designed to enhance the well-being and quality of life of both the person living with dementia and their caregiver. It does so by supporting a person’s capabilities and engagement in daily activities through reducing environmental stressors and enhancing caregiver knowledge and skills for managing daily care challenges. COPE helps to realign caregiver understandings and expectations and environmental demands with the changing capacities of the person living with dementia.

Through its innovative assessment and learning-through-doing approach to providing education and specific skills, COPE helps families manage common clinical symptoms of dementia including functional dependencies, dementia-related behavioral and psychological symptoms, and caregiver-centered concerns including distress need for respite and understanding of the disease process.

COPE is most effective for people living at home with dementia of any etiology, who have a caregiver living with them or nearby, and who are experiencing deteriorating quality of life and/or distress.

WHY COPE IS IMPORTANT

  • Assesses the abilities and interests of people living with dementia, identifies caregiver challenges, and provides disease education, skills in managing dementia care, referrals and linkages, social support, and more
  • Results in improved caregiver confidence, home safety, and decreased functional dependence and behavioral challenges
  • Identifies medical concerns that may be un-detected but can be managed

Occupational Therapists (OTs), Nurses and other healthcare professionals who work closely with OTs, and Nurses working in home care, community-based programs (PACE, adult day services), hospitals, or long-term care facilities are all eligible.
